  • I only managed to half complete this shoot; the casting agent ignored my prep timeline and offered options at last minute. This proved fatal as the male model proved not to be sample size and couldn't fit into any of the clothes; thus the shoot was completed with only the female model.

  • Working aboard can be great due to the travel involved but, when the budget doesn't cover the rest of your team and you have to rely on unknown, and untested, assistance it can be difficult. In this instance an inexperienced assistant proved to be a waste of resources and time, failing to direct light on to the model in virtually every shot.

  • Zhujiajiao is a town located in the Qingpu district of Shanghai. Elements of it were perfect for an atmospheric shoot, however not the canal which was a horrible brown colour. The shoot also proved to be a source of entertainment and interest for visitors who stopped and watched.

  • I first photographed this dress when it went down the catwalk for Gucci during Milan Fashion Week when I was in the photographer's pit. It was fun to photograph it again on the other side of the world in Shanghai.

  • The weather for this shoot was freezing; look at the colour of the model's hands.

  • Women's Fashion IMG_4698.jpg
  • This shot was achieved with a 16- 35mm wide angle lens. Having only just bought the lens I was still getting used to it. This shot wasn't planned, I was playing with the lens and realised an image was possible and voila!

  • With no bannister these narrow stairs, while photogenic, were really rather precarious and the only way up to the first floor.
    Women's Fashion Shot 5-390.jpg
  • Most of the shoot was conducted with a scrim to diffuse the sunlight and then bouncing light onto the subject with a Sunbounce.

  • The light at this exact location of the Ace Cafe was lovely, due to a roof window above the model.

  • Hotel shoots, such as this one, can take time to confirm as the hotels have to agree to give up a room/ suite for the shoot. Confirmation for this shoot was further delayed as the original recce date couldn't be achieved; a guest deciding to stay an extra night due to not being able to fly home due to a severe weather front. Who says what happens on the other side of the world doesn't affect what's happening at home.

  • A deliberately stylistic 'blue' shoot, completed in an empty white styled flat in London; this was fun to shoot.
    Women's Fashion Shot 1-043.jpg
  • This angle was spotted by the stylist; this was from a very low angle in order to have the sky as the background and avoid a brick wall just behind the model.

  • The last shot of the day, I struggled with this image. I'm usually drained when it comes to the end of a shoot and there's usually pressure to take 'another' shot and maximise the location and the looks. It's important to remember it's a marathon, not a sprint, and to pace oneself.
    Women's Fashion JN7A6697.jpg
  • An impromptu shot; the light and the leading lines of the stain glass window were too good to pass up.
    Women's Fashion JN7A4912.jpg
  • If you look closely, the model doesn't have an earring in her right ear; turns out she only had one ear pierced.

  • One of the crew knew the model's boyfriend. It's a really small world.
    Women's Fashion JN7A3419.jpg
  • There's a reason why successful teams work together; finding a rhythm and working relationship to a shoot is important to ensuring it is a success. In this instance it took me a while to realise that Ben was producing far better results when I was not offering any direction.
    Women's Fashion JN7A8167.jpg
  • Ben stepped in at last minute to model this shoot as the booked model failed to show on the day. Nothing goes to plan, the challenge is how you overcome them.

  • This stunning location was in the Roca Llisa estate in Ibiza.

  • My work has sometimes been described as cinematic. Given my love of the silver screen it's a description I take as a compliment.

  • Shot in April, a combination of strong sunlight and white walls meant the natural light was too hard to control. As a result the whole shoot was conducted with the curtains closed and with flash.
    Women's Fashion Shot 8-564.jpg
  • This image was taken after I called wrap. Our experienced make up artist realised we hadn't quite nailed this shot and so quickly called the model back and helped to ensure we got this final photograph.
    Women's Fashion JN7A3681.jpg
  • This shoot kicked off strangely. Half the team were allowed into the suite by the hotel, while the other half, including myself, were made to wait in the lobby.
    Women's Fashion JN7A8427.jpg
  • This image was taken with only the natural light that was flooding the bathroom where Linda, the female, was lying in the bath. The shot was exposed on her.
    Men's Fashion JN7A8620.jpg
  • This image was a spur of the moment shot after I saw the light and potential composition from the top of the stairs. The female model, Olivia Inge, was one of the models at the first ever catwalk show I photographed and went on to marry a friend of mine from university; it's a small world.
    Men's Fashion JN2A1715.jpg
  • Another former soldier, Jaco van Gass, willing to step in front of the camera I photographed this at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester. I waited for the female GB Cycling Team to be in the background before pressing the shutter.
